Michael Savage offered listeners a history lesson about the similarities (and differences) between Benito Mussolini’s domestic spending policies and those of Barack Obama.

Savage explained that when Italian dictator Benito Mussolini came to power, “the first thing he did was start public works projects along the same lines as Barack Obama: bridges to nowhere and roads to nowhere.”

He added:

They were immensely popular in Italy, because at least they put people back to work.

This model of massive public works projects was then adopted by Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Adolf Hitler, and again, the people approved of these projects.

One difference between Mussolini and Obama (and the differences are many) is that while Mussolini was building roads and bridges to nowhere, he was also building up the Italian navy.

In fact, at the outset of World War II, the Italian navy was larger than that of Germany and Great Britain combined.

On the other hand, while Obama is building roads to nowhere, he’s destroying the American military at the same time.

There’s one thing you don’t know about Barack Obama: He is true to his cause. He’s following the script that was clearly laid out for him.

His calling is to weaken America in any way he can and to strengthen America’s enemies in any way he can.

How else do you explain they’re still calling the rise of Islamic regimes “the Arab Spring” when everyone knows the regimes rising there are far worse than those which were just overthrown?

Why is Obama cheering the Islamists everywhere across the Arab landscape?

It leads you to ask yourself what side he’s on and whether he’s not playing for the opposing team.

It leads serious men to stay awake long into the night and ask themselves: Have we been invaded and have the enemies already taken over this country?

GORE'S 'POPULAR VOTE' SCHEME TO ENSURE DEMOCRAT RULE?

Al Gore’s claim that an end to the Electoral College will ensure all voters get equal representation in a popular vote is contradicted by a recently released book that documents how the “popular vote” campaign could see only 14 states – those with the largest populations, most of which are majority-Democrat – decide the presidency for voters in all 50 states.

Gore took to his Current TV to push for the abolishment of the Electoral College and its replacement with the so-called popular vote. He claimed that many voters who live outside the dozen or so battleground states are being cheated by the current system that allocates delegates from the state level, reported The Hill.

Obama Sent Personal Letter of Condolence to Rapper’s Family… Sent Form Letter to Families of Fallen SEALs

Last November Barack Obama sent a personal letter of condolence when rapper Heavy D passed away at 44.

Al Sharpton read the note at the funeral.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time. He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.”

But when 17 members of the elite Navy SEALs were killed in the crash in Afghanistan back in August 2011, he sent their parents a form letter.

It was the deadliest single loss for U.S. forces in the decade-long war in Afghanistan. And, Obama sent these families a form letter.

North Korea makes "significant" nuclear reactor progress: IAEA

VIENNA (Reuters) - North Korea has made significant progress in the construction of a light water atomic reactor over the past year, a U.N. watchdog report said, a facility that may extend Pyongyang's capacity to produce material for nuclear weapons.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), citing satellite images, also said "certain activities" had been observed at locations where the reclusive Asian state "reportedly" conducted nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009.

'Pray for Obama' sign stirs controversy over Biblical verse

VICTORIA, Tx. -- The Secret Service is looking into a sign posted in Victoria, Texas.

The sign says "Pray for Obama", but it's the scripture quoted below those words that is raising eyebrows: Psalms 109:8.

Psalms 109:8 reads, "Let his days be few, and let another take his office."

Milton Neitsch  Jr., who has lived in Victoria since 1961,  says he didn't intend for people to pick up on the hateful wishes of death and pain surrounding the tiny verse.

But some people say it is hateful and inappropriate. They say it misuses the holy scripture and it must come down.

Neitsch  recently received an email from a friend and decided to post it on his advertising billboard along North Navarro Street. He had no idea the firestorm of controversy it would create.

"Pray for the president. He needs it," said Neitsch.
When asked what the sign means, Neitsch responded, "Exactly what it says. Hope he's gone soon and somebody different takes his place."

Reverend Amy Danchik started a petition demanding Neitsch take down the sign. They've since met and Neitsch and agreed to replace the billboard.
"He shared with me a little about some of the threats that have come at his family, which is incredibly inappropriate, and in no way helpful and in no way how we're called to react  when we disagree with somebody," said Danchik. "So I hope that those stop. I hope that people will react with the graciousness that he has reacted with and leave his family alone."

Neitsch says he is also getting plenty of support. He said he might replace the sign with something like, "Vote for the American", a sign that would no doubt stir emotion, while leaving the word of God to the experts.

Code enforcement  in the City of Victoria says they don't review the content of signs. They said they would only get involved if the sign affected traffic.

U.S. Scales-Back Military Exercise with Israel, Affecting Potential Iran Strike

 A smaller U.S. contingent may make it more difficult for the Israeli government to launch a pre-emptive strike on Tehran's nuclear program.

Seven months ago, Israel and the United States postponed a massive joint military exercise that was originally set to go forward just as concerns were brimming that Israel would launch a strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The exercise was rescheduled for late October, and appears likely to go forward on the cusp of the U.S. presidential election. But it won’t be nearly the same exercise. Well-placed sources in both countries have told TIME that Washington has greatly reduced the scale of U.S. participation, slashing by more than two-thirds the number of American troops going to Israel and reducing both the number and potency of missile interception systems at the core of the joint exercise.

“Basically what the Americans are saying is, ‘We don’t trust you,’” a senior Israeli military official tells TIME.
The reductions are striking. Instead of the approximately 5,000 U.S. troops originally trumpeted for Austere Challenge 12, as the annual exercise is called, the Pentagon will send only 1,500 service members, and perhaps as few as 1,200.  Patriot anti-missile systems will arrive in Israel as planned, but the crews to operate them will not.  Instead of two Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense warships being dispatched to Israeli waters, the new plan is to send one, though even the remaining vessel is listed as a “maybe,” according to officials in both militaries.

A Pentagon spokesperson declined to discuss specifics of the reduced deployment, noting that planning for the exercise was classified. But in an e-mailed statement, Commander Wendy L. Snyder emphasized that the Israeli military has been kept informed of the changes. “Throughout all the planning and coordination, we’ve been lock-step with the Israel Defense Force (IDF) and will continue to do so,” Snyder said.

U.S. commanders privately revealed the scaling back to their Israeli counterparts more than two months ago.  The official explanation was budget restrictions.  But the American retreat coincided with growing tensions between the Obama and Netanyahu administrations on Israel’s persistent threats to launch an airstrike on Iran. The Islamic Republic would be expected to retaliate by missile strikes, either through its own intermediate range arsenal or through its proxy, the Hizballah militia, which has more than 40,000 missiles aimed at Israel from neighboring Lebanon.

In the current political context, the U.S. logic is transparent, says Israeli analyst Efraim Inbar. “I think they don’t want to insinuate that they are preparing something together with the Israelis against Iran – that’s the message,” says Inbar, director of the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar-Ilan University. “Trust? We don’t trust them. They don’t trust us. All these liberal notions! Even a liberal president like Obama knows better.”

The U.S. anti-missile systems are important because while Israel has made great strides in creating anti-missile shields that protect its population, it doesn’t have enough of them to deploy around the entire country, even with the U.S. aid specifically dedicated to building more (as well as crucial offensive capabilities, such as mid-air refuelers and possibly bunker-busting bombs).  That makes the presence of the Patriots – first deployed to Israel during the First Gulf War, when Saddam Hussein fired Scuds toward the Jewish State — and other U.S. anti-missile systems extremely valuable.  Austere Challenge was billed by assistant secretary of state Andrew J. Shapiro last November as “by far the largest and most significant exercise in U.S.-Israeli history.”  A stated goal was to “improve interoperability” between American and Israeli anti-missile systems – which are already significantly linked. The U.S. maintains an X-band radar installation in Israel’s Negev Desert, pointed toward Iran and linked to Israel’s Arrow anti-missile system.

The radar is extraordinarily powerful, so sensitive it can detect a softball thrown into the air from thousands of miles away.  But as TIME reported earlier, only Americans are allowed to see what’s on the screens, a situation that likely serves to inhibit any Israeli decision to “go it alone” against Iran, because the U.S. array can detect an Iranian missile launch six to seven minutes earlier than Israel’s best radar.  Difficult as it may be to imagine U.S. decision-makers holding back information that could save Israeli lives, both by giving them more time to reach a shelter, or their interceptors to lock onto and destroy an incoming Shahab-3, the risk looms in the complex calculus of Israeli officials mulling an attack on Iran.

Inside Israel, reports persist that prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and defense chief Ehud Barak are determined to launch a strike, and American officials continue to urge restraint.  Israeli analysts say Netanyahu wants Obama to send a letter committing to U.S. military action by a specific date if Iran has not acceded to concessions, but the U.S. administration does not appear to be complying.  U.S. Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey told reporters in London this week  that a military strike could damage but not destroy Iran’s nuclear capability, and added, “I don’t want to be complicit if they choose to do it.”

Affirmed: Study that 'gay' family children more troubled

The University of Texas at Austin says it has investigated and found no evidence of research misconduct in a study that found adult children from “gay” families are “more apt to report being unemployed, less healthy, more depressed, more likely to have cheated on a spouse or partner, smoke more pot, had trouble with the law” than children from traditional mom-and-dad households.

“The University of Texas at Austin has determined that no formal investigation is warranted into the allegations of scientific misconduct lodged against associate professor Mark Regnerus regarding his July article in the journal Social Science Research,” the school announced yesterday.

It said a four-member advisory panel of senior university faculty members was consulted and an outside consultant, Alan Price, was asked to review the charges as part of the university inquiry into allegations made by Scott Rosensweig in a letter to the school.

The conclusion was that the issues raised fell under the clause that “ordinary errors, good faith differences in interpretations of or judgments of data, scholarly or political disagreements, good faith personal or professional opinions, or private moral and ethical behavior or views are not misconduct.”

The university said it considers the issue closed after school Research Integrity Officer Robert Peterson told officials “none of the allegations of scientific misconduct put forth by Mr. [Rosensweig was] substantiated either by physical data, written materials, or by information provided during the interviews.”

He wrote “there is no evidence” to support Rosensweig’s inference that because he believed the research was flawed, there must be scientific misconduct.

Regnerus had written a commentary about his study for Slate.com. He said that one “notable theme” among adult children of same-sex parents who reported higher levels of “male and female sex partners, more sexual victimization, and were more likely to reflect negatively on their childhood” than children of mom-and-dad households was “household instability, and plenty of it.”

He explained his study “collected data from a large, random cross-section of American young adults – apart from the census, the largest population-based dataset prepared to answer research questions about households in which mothers or fathers have had same-sex relationships.”
Regnerus said all participants who responded affirmatively were interviewed.

“The differences, it turns out, were numerous. For instance, 28 percent of the adult children of women who’ve had same-sex relationships are currently unemployed, compared to 8 percent of those from married mom-and-dad families. Forty percent of the former admit to having had an affair while married or cohabiting, compared to 13 percent of the latter. Nineteen percent of the former said they were currently or recently in psychotherapy for problems connected with anxiety, depression, or relationships, compared with 8 percent of the latter. And those are just three of the 25 differences I noted.”

He said the bottom line of the study is that “social scientists, parents, and advocates would do well from here forward to avoid simply assuming the kids are all right.”
In a commentary, also in Slate, William Saletan wrote, “Mark Regnerus is a hateful bigot. … His new research paper on same-sex parenting is ‘intentionally misleading’ and ‘seeks to disparage lesbian and gay parents’ … His ‘junk science’ … deserve[s] no coverage or credence.”

Rosensweig had alleged there were problems with Regenerus’ “seeming falsification of data,” “seemingly inadequate, inappropriate research design,” his “possible bad-faith, invalid comparison” and that he “seemingly feeds into NOM’s defamatory conflation of homosexuals with pedophiles.”
But the university determined “since no evidence was provided to indicate that the behavior at issue rose to a level of scientific misconduct, no formal investigation is warranted.”

The Alliance Defending Freedom said the New Family Structures Study “suggests that differences exist in outcomes for young adults raised in various environmental with different family experiences.”

“America’s universities should always serve as truth-seeking, free marketplaces of ideas,” said David Hacker, ADF senior legal counsel. “Disagreeing with a study’s conclusions is not grounds for allegations of scientific misconduct” ando “we are not surprised that those accusations were found to be baseless.

“This comprehensive, peer-reviewed research study consisted of leading scholars and researchers across disciplines and ideological lines in a spirit of civility and reasoned inquiry. We agree with the AT-Austin inquiry’s conclusions.”

National Atheist Party Cancels Convention Due To Lack Of Funding

BOSTON (CBS Connecticut) — The National Atheist Party is canceling its secular convention due to a lack of funding.

Troy Boyle, the party’s president, announced on its website won’t be holding NAPCON 2012 in Boston in October because it would bankrupt the group.

“After this year’s amazing Reason Rally, and flush with our successful recruiting and a spike in donations, we decided to hold our OWN secular event. NAPCON 2012 was supposed to be our biggest and best public event; our chance to show the U.S. that we could fund and organize a large, noteworthy and impressive

‘Secular Summit’ that would attract media buzz and even more interested members and donations. The reality is that we can’t,” Boyle said in the press release. “The donations simply aren’t there and if we went ahead with the event as planned, it would bankrupt us.”

The second annual convention was supposed to consist of several speakers and musical acts over two days, as well as giving away free prizes to fellow atheists.

Boyle blames a lack of donations and sponsors, along with several prominent people backing out of the convention.

“The plain fact of the matter is that we have to cancel the event and spend more time and careful planning to make our 2013 convention a solid and better organized success,” Boyle said. “I am disappointed and disheartened, certainly, as I’m sure you all are, but I’m also committed to learning the lessons of this ‘failure to launch.’”

The party – which was founded in March 2011 – states on its website that it “is a Constitutional movement dedicated to the preservation of the Founding Fathers’ vision of a secular nation.” Officials hope to develop it into a full-fledged political party.

7.9 earthquake rocks Philippines, tsunami warning issued

Manila: An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter Scale rocked the coast of Philippines on Friday. Following the earthquake, tsunami warnings were issued for Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan and Japan.

Tsunami alerts were also issued for Papua New Guinea and other islands in the Pacific, including the US state of Hawaii.

The NOAA Tsunami Center later lifted a warning for Japan, Taiwan and several other Pacific islands.

Scientists Store 70 Billion Books on DNA - powerful evidence for intelligent design

Data storage technology has come a long way since punch cards. But the undisputed king of data density is still DNA. A team of scientists fit 70 billion copies of their genetics book—including page formatting instructions and images totaling 700 terabytes of data—into just one gram of DNA.

Harvard scientist George Church led this technological feat.¹ The scientists first built a digital coding and decoding scheme whereby either of two of DNA's four chemical bases was designated "0," and either of the other two bases was designated "1." How could they successfully copy digital information of their choice, using zeroes and ones coded into DNA strands?

They used next-generation high-fidelity DNA microchips to print the DNA in 96 base-pair pieces. Sequencers then read each of those pieces, taken at random from a mixed pool. A computer reassembled the data into its proper order because the scientists engineered ID tag sequences every 19 base pairs. In the end, they "printed" billions of book copies in a fingernail-sized puddle of DNA.

There is no material that has as much data storage density as DNA. It is better than blue-ray discs, hard drives, and even flash drives. The Science report shows that DNA is six powers of ten denser than flash drive technology.

The sheer superiority of DNA as a data storage medium is strong evidence for its supernatural creation. This may even be one of the reasons why the 20th century's most prominent intellectual atheist, the late Antony Flew, confessed, "What I think the DNA material has done is show that intelligence must have been involved in getting these extraordinary diverse elements together."²

Navy Seal Releases"Bin Laden Kill" Book - Gov't May Force Him To Give Up All Royalties

Former SEAL worried about new book

At least one former U.S. Navy SEAL is worried that a book about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden could jeopardize future special operations missions.

John McGuire left the service as a first class petty officer after 10 years in the Navy, much of it as a SEAL.

"We have something in the military called OPSEC, which is operational security, and people can piece tiny pieces of information together to get a picture they don't need to have," McGuire told CNN on Thursday. "We know too much as it is."

"When people give away secrets and talk about these exploits like this, connections can be drawn together to put them and our security in harm's way," McGuire said.
The new book by former SEAL Matt Bissonnette, published under the pseudonym Mark Owen, is titled
"No Easy Day."

It goes step by step through the SEAL team's training and practicing for the May 2011 raid, the assault itself and the aftermath. It tells a heart-pounding story, but nowhere near as violent or explosive as a typical Hollywood movie.

He has not read the book yet, but McGuire said the details of the bin Laden episode may not seem new but that is not the issue.

"It's one thing to assume to know what we do, it's another thing to confirm it first hand," he said.
Bissonnette, a chief petty officer when he left the Navy, writes that he will give the majority of proceeds from the book to military support groups.

"I would see that as a noble thing," McGuire said, "but if it harms other guys...."

The book is one of several accounts about the operation to have surfaced.

DNC CAVES TO PRESSURE! Invites Cardinal to Pray at DNC After Obama Snub

Joseph Zwilling, spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York, announced Monday that Cardinal Timothy Dolan has been invited to pray at the Democratic National Convention. 

Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, has accepted an invitation to deliver the closing prayer at next week’s Democratic National Convention.  As was previously announced, he will also be offering the closing prayer at the Republican Convention on Thursday of this week.
It was made clear to the Democratic Convention organizers, as it was to the Republicans, that the Cardinal was coming solely as a pastor, only to pray, not to endorse any party, platform, or candidate.  The Cardinal consulted Bishop Peter Jugis of the Diocese of Charlotte, who gave the Cardinal his consent to take part in the convention that will be taking place in his diocese.

Last week, when it was announced Cardinal Dolan would pray at the Republican National Convention, Democratic officials pointedly ignored the Cardinal's offer to do the same at the Democratic National Convention. But criticism of this snub grew, especially in light of the Democratic Party's official embrace of a radical Muslim group's "Jumah" at the DNC.
The DNC's initial failure to invite Cardinal Dolan was seen as a victory of "social justice" Catholics over pro-life Catholics. The victory was temporary, however, as the backlash (powered largely by new media outlets) was too great for the Democratic Party to ignore.
Plans to continue with the controversial "Jumah at the DNC," however, appear to be unaffected by the reversal of the Dolan snub.

'GQ' cover appearance comes as 'shocker' to Jets' Tim Tebow

Tuesday we told you that Tim Tebow was on the cover of GQ's NFL preview issue.
Turns out you might have been aware of it before the New York Jets backup quarterback was.

"Honestly, I didn't even know," Tebow said Thursday. "It kind of was a shocker for me."

The magazine recycled some photos with religious overtones from the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner's days at the University of Florida.

"It was something that I think I did maybe six years ago in college," Tebow said. "Honestly, the first time I heard was when we were in the cafeteria (Tuesday), and it was on ESPN. That's when I found out, so it was kind of a shocker to me as well."

Tebow said he hasn't received any razzing from teammates yet about his shirtless poses but admitted, "I'm sure that'll come up sooner than later though."

As to whether he has any concerns about the dated photo shoot, which includes one picture of him seeming to pose as if he was on a crucifix?

"I have heard someone ask me about that," Tebow said. "Was I trying to do anything as far as the crucifix? Absolutely not. I mean, I don't know. It was six years ago, I don't even remember what I was doing. But I wasn't trying to do anything like that though."
Perhaps that comes as a relief to some in the religious community.

Gerald Zelizer, rabbi at Congregation Neve Shalom in Metuchen, N.J., is a Jets fan who wrote an opinion piece for The (Newark) Star-Ledger last Sunday in which he saluted Tebow for his "religious integrity" and concluded: "I reluctantly admire the pristine faith of a young man like Tebow, who prays as he plays and preaches as he practices."

But asked to respond how the Jesus-like portrayal shot of Tebow that was re-used by GQ might be resonating with the Jewish community in the New York City metropolitan area, Zelizer was not pleased.
"I regret seeing sincere and admirable faith become transformed into cartoon-like self parody," Zelizer emailed to USA TODAY Sports.

I started covering this at Apprising Ministries in Tim Tebow “Jesus” Pose Stirs Controversy. As I said, I followed the Tim Tebow phenomenon with much interest as it developed last year.
This is because for years I served God as a head football coach at the middle school, and then later, at the high school level so I know what a teaching vehicle the game can be.
I also told you that as far as I can see, Tim Tebow does appear to be sincere in his Christian faith even though I wouldn’t necessarily do or advocate all the things he does.
The heart of the matter is the GQ NFL Kick-off 2012 issue and the pose below:

That would appear to be a pose similar to Jesus on the cross, which as you might imagine, stirred up a bit of controversy. The fact is Christian Post points out in Tim Tebow Chided on His Birthday for Posing as ‘Sexy Jesus’:

Though featured in the newest issue of GQ magazine, the photo in question was taken earlier when Tebow was quarterback for the Florida Gators in college.

Another thing I brought out was that we weren’t there and don’t know what the photographer said to him. Nor do we know what kind of a release for this photo shoot may have been signed.
It seems clear that GQ did secure the right to use it. Today I’m told by a source who claims to know Tim
Tebow that the photographer was taking pictures of him as he did his warmup for practice.
They say that Tebow wasn’t actually posing as Jesus at all; but rather, he was simply stretching. Since I personally never used a stretch like that for my players in warmup I wouldn’t recognize it as such.

Now, according to Tim Tebow himself, he doesn’t actually remember exactly what he was doing that day six years ago but insists that he was “absolutely not” trying to do a crucifixion pose:

“Honestly, I didn’t even know until — actually probably most of [you] knew that I was on there before I knew, so it kind of was a shocker for me,” Tebow said in comments to the media, which were transcribed and distributed by the team.

“It was something that I think I did maybe six years ago in college.  Honestly the first time I heard [it] was when we were in the cafeteria and it was on ESPN.  That’s when I found out, so it was kind of a shocker to me as well.”

It’s hardly obvious that the photos are outdated; the most controversial image appears to have Tebow in a crucifix pose, with the color dulled to the point where it creates the impression that the pants are Jet green and not Gator blue.
 

“Was I trying to do anything as far as the crucifix?” Tebow said.  “Absolutely not.  I mean, I don’t know — it was six years ago, I don’t even remember what I was doing, but I wasn’t trying to do anything like that though.”

PPSIMMONS RESPONSE:  We pray Tim is completely innocent in this. We will be totally convinced when we see or hear something about a release agreement for the photos, etc. GQ could not have used the photos without Tim's permission and knowledge. It could be that he did not know about the title of the story, though.

THE PRESIDENT:  Thank you, everybody.  (Applause.)  Please, please have a seat.  Good evening, everyone.  And welcome to the White House.

Of all the freedoms we cherish as Americans, of all the rights that we hold sacred, foremost among them is freedom of religion, the right to worship as we choose.  It’s enshrined in the First Amendment of our Constitution -- the law of the land, always and forever.  It beats in our heart -- in the soul of the people who know that our liberty and our equality is endowed by our Creator.  And it runs through the history of this house, a place where Americans of many faiths can come together and celebrate their holiest of days -- and that includes Ramadan.

As I’ve noted before, Thomas Jefferson once held a sunset dinner here with an envoy from Tunisia -- perhaps the first Iftar at the White House, more than 200 years ago.  And some of you, as you arrived tonight, may have seen our special display, courtesy of our friends at the Library of Congress -- the Koran that belonged to Thomas Jefferson.  And that's a reminder, along with the generations of patriotic Muslims in America, that Islam -- like so many faiths -- is part of our national story.

This evening, we’re honored to be joined by members of our diplomatic corps, members of Congress -- including Muslim American members of Congress, Keith Ellison and Andre Carson -- as well as leaders from across my administration.  And to you, the millions of Muslim Americans across our country, and to the more than one billion Muslims around the world -- Ramadan Kareem.

Now, every faith is unique.  And yet, during Ramadan, we see the traditions that are shared by many faiths:  Believers engaged in prayer and fasting, in humble devotion to God.  Families gathering together with love for each other.  Neighbors reaching out in compassion and charity, to serve the less fortunate.  People of different faiths coming together, mindful of our obligations to one another -- to peace, justice and dignity for all people -- men and women.  Indeed, you know that the Koran teaches, "Be it man or woman, each of you is equal to the other."

And by the way, we’ve seen this in recent days.  In fact, the Olympics is being called "The Year of the Woman."  (Laughter.)  Here in America, we’re incredibly proud of Team USA -- all of them -- but we should notice that a majority of the members are women.  Also, for the very first time in Olympic history, every team now includes a woman athlete.  And one of the reasons is that every team from a Muslim-majority country now includes women as well.  And more broadly -- that's worth applauding.  (Applause.)  Absolutely.

More broadly, we’ve seen the extraordinary courage of Muslim women during the Arab Spring -- women, right alongside men, taking to the streets to claim their universal rights, marching for their freedom, blogging and tweeting and posting videos, determined to be heard.  In some cases, facing down tanks, and braving bullets, enduring detentions and unspeakable treatment, and at times, giving their very lives for the freedom that they seek -- the liberty that we are lucky enough to enjoy here tonight. 

These women have inspired their sisters and daughters, but also their brothers and their sons.  And they’ve inspired us all. Even as we see women casting their ballots and seeking -- standing for office in historic elections, we understand that their work is not done.  They understand that any true democracy must uphold the freedom and rights of all people and all faiths. We know this, too, for here in America we're enriched by so many faiths, by men and women -- including Muslim American women.

They’re young people, like the student who wrote me a letter about what it’s like to grow up Muslim in America.  She’s in college.  She dreams of a career in international affairs to help deepen understanding between the United States and Muslim countries around the world.  So if any of the diplomatic corps have tips for her -- (laughter.)  She says that "America has always been the land of opportunity for me, and I love this country with all my heart."  And so we’re glad to have Hala Baig here today.  (Applause.)
 
They are faith leaders like Sanaa Nadim, one of the first Muslim chaplains at an American college -- a voice for interfaith dialogue who's had the opportunity to meet with the Pope to discuss these issues.  We're very proud to have you here.  (Applause.) 

They are educators like Auysha Muhayya, born in Afghanistan, who fled with her family as refugees to America, and now, as a language teacher, helps open her students to new cultures.  So we're very pleased to have her here.  (Applause.)

They are entrepreneurs and lawyers, community leaders, members of our military, and Muslim American women serving with distinction in government.  And that includes a good friend, Huma Abedin, who has worked tirelessly -- (applause) -- worked tirelessly in the White House, in the U.S. Senate, and most exhaustingly, at the State Department, where she has been nothing less than extraordinary in representing our country and the democratic values that we hold dear.  Senator Clinton has relied on her expertise, and so have I.

The American people owe her a debt of gratitude -- because Huma is an American patriot, and an example of what we need in this country -- more public servants with her sense of decency, her grace and her generosity of spirit.  So, on behalf of all Americans, we thank you so much.  (Applause.) 

These are the faces of Islam in America.  These are just a few of the Muslim Americans who strengthen our country every single day.  This is the diversity that makes us Americans; the pluralism that we will never lose.

And at times, we have to admit that this spirit is threatened.  We’ve seen instances of mosques and synagogues, churches and temples being targeted.  Tonight, our prayers, in particular, are with our friends and fellow Americans in the Sikh community.  We mourn those who were senselessly murdered and injured in their place of worship.  And while we may never fully understand what motivates such hatred, such violence, the perpetrators of such despicable acts must know that your twisted thinking is no match for the compassion and the goodness and the strength of our united American family.

So tonight, we declare with one voice that such violence has no place in the United States of America.  The attack on Americans of any faith is an attack on the freedom of all Americans.  (Applause.)  No American should ever have to fear for their safety in their place of worship.  And every American has the right to practice their faith both openly and freely, and as they choose.

That is not just an American right; it is a universal human right.  And we will defend the freedom of religion, here at home and around the world.  And as we do, we’ll draw on the strength and example of our interfaith community, including the leaders who are here tonight.

So I want to thank all of you for honoring us with your presence, for the example of your lives, and for your commitment to the values that make us "one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."  (Applause.)
